Korean American candidate Suzy Kim, who has officially entered the Los Angeles mayoral primary election set for June 2, has launched her campaign centered on the core values of “unity and recovery.” Drawing on her experience as a mental health professional and clinical therapist, Kim is emphasizing the need for meaningful change in Los Angeles city leadership.

Born in 1981, Kim says she dreamed from elementary school of becoming “the first female president of the United States.” She describes public office as the work of a “public servant” dedicated to serving the people. Kim has reportedly been preparing for the mayoral race for over a year and demonstrated early organizational strength by successfully collecting the 1,200 signatures required to qualify as a candidate.

Her educational and professional background is diverse and international. Kim studied political science and journalism at Loyola University Chicago and previously worked in broadcasting, law offices, and educational consulting in Korea and Hong Kong. She later shifted her career toward mental health, earning a degree in clinical psychology and obtaining her LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) credential.

Currently, Kim works with SMART under the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. The team partners with the LAPD to respond directly to mental health crises, providing 24-hour services including assessments, crisis intervention, hospital transport, and treatment coordination.

Explaining her decision to enter politics, Kim stated, “People from many professional backgrounds — including nurses and police officers — have become mayors. There is no reason a mental health professional cannot run for office as well.” Her campaign slogan, “Reimagining LA Together,” highlights cooperation and recovery that transcend political divisions between liberals and conservatives.

One of her key policy priorities is addressing homelessness. Kim emphasized that while helping people already experiencing homelessness is important, preventing people from reaching that stage is even more critical. She advocates for stronger collaboration among local agencies and the creation of an integrated response system.

Kim is also a mother of two sons and is expecting her third child. Influenced by her mother, a former principal of a Korean language school in Southern California, she is fluent in Korean and actively engages voters through local churches and the Korean American community.

“This may look like a David versus Goliath fight,” Kim said, “but what matters is the courage to take on the challenge itself. I will do my best until the very end to make Los Angeles a warmer and more practical city.”

오는 6월2일 실시되는 LA 시장 예비선거에 출사표를 던진 한인 수지 김 후보가 ‘연대와 회복’을 핵심 가치로 내세우며 본격적인  정치 행보에 나섰다. 정신건강 전문가이자 임상 치료사인 그는 현장에서의 경험을 바탕으로 LA 시정 변화의 필요성을 강조하고 있다.

1981년생인 김 후보는 초등학교 시절부터 “미국 최초의 여성 대통령이 되겠다”는 꿈을 품었다고 밝히며, 공직을 ‘시민을 섬기는 일(public servant)’로 정의한다. 그는 1년 전부터 시장 선거를 준비해 왔으며, 후보 등록에 필요한 1,200명의 서명도 무난히 확보하며 첫 도전부터 조직력을 보여줬다.

학력과 경력도 다양하다. 그는 시카고 로욜라 대학교에서 정치학과 저널리즘을 전공했으며 방송국과 법률 사무소 근무, 한국과 홍콩에서의 교육 컨설팅 등 국제적인 경력을 쌓았다. 이후 정신건강 분야로 진로를 전환해 임상심리학을 전공하고 LMFT(결혼·가족 치료사) 자격을 취득했다.

현재 그는 LA 카운티 정신건강국 소속 SMART에서 활동 중이다. 이 팀은 LAPD와 협력해 정신건강 위기 상황에 직접 출동하는 전문 대응 조직으로, 평가·위기 중재·병원 이송·치료 연계까지 수행하는 24시간 대응 시스템이다.

정치 참여 이유에 대해 그는 “간호사나 경찰 등 다양한 전문직 출신들이 시장이 되어 왔다”며 “정신건강 전문가라고 해서 정치에 도전하지 못할 이유는 없다”고 말했다. 그의 선거 슬로건은 ‘함께 LA를 새롭게’로, 진보와 보수를 넘어선 협력과 회복을 강조한다.

핵심 공약은 노숙자 문제 해결이다. 그는 “이미 노숙 상태에 있는 사람을 돕는 것도 중요하지만, 그 이전 단계에서 예방하는 것이 더 중요하다”며 지역 기관 간 협력과 통합 대응 시스템 구축을 강조하고 있다.

그는 현재 두 아들의 어머니이며 셋째 출산을 앞두고 있다. 남가주 한국학교 교장을 지낸 어머니의 영향으로 한국어에 능숙하며, 지역 교회와 한인 커뮤니티를 중심으로 유권자들과 소통하고 있다. 김 후보는 “다윗과 골리앗의 싸움처럼 보일 수 있지만 중요한 것은 도전 그 자체”라며 “LA를 더 따뜻하고 현실적인 도시로 바꾸기 위해 끝까지 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다. 후원 문의 (818)271-8892, www.suzykimforla.com
